The Right Stuff is an excellent movie! Really positive and uplifting about a time we came together to achieve greatness; just what we need today with all the tribalism, negativity and pessimism that is rampant in our society. Also worth watching related to Soviet/Cold War era: Thirteen Days with Kevin Costner and Bruce Greenwood: the suspense of the Cuban Missile Crisis and coming to the brink of nuclear war; two not so happy old time flicks that everyone should watch, and I would love to see your reaction to: On the Beach- 1959; the plight of a small group of survivors of a fictitious nuclear war, and Dr. Strangelove- 1964- a great satire from that era of a group of military brass and government officials' attempt to stop a nuclear 'doomsday machine' and rogue commander from setting off WW3.

2:35 -- RE: "The Right Stuff"; Several things about this film are Fun Facts. Example: It's primary music composer was Bill Conti (of Rocky fame); the opening sequence of "The Rocketeer" seems to be an homage to this film; two of the supporting cast not mentioned on the box are Jeff Goldblum and Harry Shearer; and the producer was the son of film legend Alan Ladd, which explains the power casting. The dude who plays Chuck Yeager is theatrical actor and director Sam Shepard. Chuck Yeager himself has a cameo in the film.

Based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck. It’s about the Depression and the Dust Bowl. I would also suggest watching The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. It’s based on a true story. Ingrid Bergman plays the lead.

No, they didn't just waterboard Bourne to try to make him accept the spy training program. The movie is alluding to the methods of torture known to produce what is known as "alters" or split personalities. When a mind is shattered during severe torture, these new alternative personalities emerge as a self-preservation mechanism. These alters are like a blank piece of paper that can then be programmed with all sorts of skills and information. Like speaking several languages. This is how "sleepers" or sleeper agents are made. Sleepers can lead a seemingly normal life and spring into action when activated. That's the short version of it. It's much more complex than this. Perhaps the contact with water when he fell in the ocean triggered the amnesia, since the water torture was part of his programming and used to shatter his mind. Often, they are programmed to go into amnesia or even self-terminate, if the knowledge they carry is too sensitive. Like the agent who jumped out of the window in the first film.

Just come across your channel. I really like your reaction to this film. I saw this film when it came out in the cinema and loved it, as you said, it was different from a typical western. A TV series was made due to the success of this film, it was called Alias Smith and Jones. The actors were different but they tried to keep the same brotherly friendship and humour. I write stories too, I have books on Amazon but not in bookshops unfortunately. I will keep trying. I haven't written a western but it's one thing I'd like to try, among a few others. I'll look out for your books. Just subscribed to you. Good luck, and take care.

You missed pretty much everything, Madison. It's a retelling of the story of Christ. The eggs (Easter symbol) represent the miracles--even after Luke eats them, someone says, "No one can eat 50 eggs; after he eats the eggs, look at how they shot is set up: Luke is lying on the wooden table in the crucifix position; the 3 days in the hotbox are the three days in the tomb; the convicts finishing his plate spoon by spoon is the Last Supper; his betrayal by a friend (in a garden/orchard, as I recall); his speech to God before his death echoes Christ in Gethsemane; Dragline's attacking Boss Godfrey echoes Peter attacking the high priest's servant in the Garden; near the end Dragline is spreading Luke's legend, and the last shot pulls up and back to reveal a CROSSroad. Then the photo of Luke is superimposed over that cross with the vertical and horizontal tears in the photo forming a second cross. Draglines speech to Luke's "disciples" sums up both Luke and Christ: "A natural-born world-shaker." These symbols are not mere coincidences.

Hi " No woman, no child " the first rule to respect, if you don't you are done.... an honor code that even the bad guys can't cross, a professional got to know his limitations, if not he is insane... " Perdition road " technically, the photography is amazing, the main word is "Shadows", light spotting from above or from beneath, depending on the symbolic of the characters in this or that context, like a Rembrandt painting style, a kind of "the godfather" movie references, the other scenes are more an 19th century impressionisme painting style, matching with the epoch. That makes me think about "Revolutionary road," "Revolutionary Road " or the premise of the rock-and-roll mouvement and the cultural liberation, then the hippies tide...according to this movie, we can see the need of a revolution of a society with a feeling of something wrong in it's "way of life". Thanks a lot 👍

I found this movie a few years ago because I was looking for movies based on novels by Donald Hamilton. There are seven. Four are Dean Martin "Matt Helm" movies, a movie starring Sterling Hayden in 1957 called "Five Steps to Danger," there is Glen Ford in the 1954 "'The Violent Men," and this movie. Donald Hamilton wrote 27 Matt Helm novels that were published from 1960 to 1993. If you get the time, watch "The Violent Men." I have these movies on DVD and BluRay and I managed to accumulate the novels that the movies were based on. Hamilton also wrote gun articles for outdoorsmen's magazines. If you liked the protagonist played by Gregory Peck in "The Big Country," you might like Glenn Ford as John Parrish in "The Violent Men." Hamiliton's protagonists are not typical--that's why they are interesting. "The Big Country" was 2 hours and 47 minutes--"The Violent Men" is only 96 minutes. The Violent Men has Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson and Brian Keith as costars. Thanks for sharing your reactions. Your comments were like watching a new movie because you see things I miss. Different people, different viewpoints.

Madison, I loved watching this. 'Vertigo' is my favorite movie, and I know well its profound emotional impact. Seeing you grapple with that impact for the first time was very moving. I've watched it innumerable times and read many analyses-there's no end to the material available on why 'Vertigo' is so special. The murder plot is secondary, a McGuffin. The real subjects are obsession, longing, and suffering. To me, the key is that Scottie is obsessed with a woman who never existed, an illusion crafted for deceptive purposes. For a 1958 audience to see America's Everyman, Jimmy Stewart, slowly lose his mind chasing this illusion and becoming a monster must have been extremely unsettling. But the main protagonist isn't Scottie, it's Judy. The film shifts to her perspective when Scottie leaves her hotel room-the camera focuses on the back of her head-and her emotional journey becomes ours. The transformation process is like a slow rape, and the most painful moment is when she fully embodies the Madeline persona. It becomes tragically obvious that she isn't loved for who she is and that their relationship is doomed. This romantic climax doesn't include Judy; it's purely one-sided. Then Scottie sees the necklace. That's when the penny drops for him, not earlier, as Hitchcock would have given clues if Scottie suspected anything before. Scottie transitions from obsession to clarity in a split second. And we know things won't end well. And then there's the music. Hermann was never better; his music is essential in creating the mysterious atmosphere of otherworldliness and intense longing that pervades much of the film. As a musician, I feel the music is almost operatic, expressing what words cannot. Sometimes this is anticipatory: Hermann introduces the Spanish habanera rhythm long before we hear or see anything about Carlotta Valdes. The Wagnerian heights he reaches in the Scene d'Amour are astounding. Vertigo is truly a masterpiece in all respects.

This movie is a masterpiece. I've recommended it to so many reactors, and no one watches it. Rarely anyone ever talks about it, either. It's beyond underrated, to a degree I can't fathom. I don't understand why people are so disinterested in this movie. Thank you for choosing to watch this instead of leaving it up to the masses.
